A dazzling symphony of colors and thunderous sounds excite us at fireworks shows. The sparks that produce these sounds are made of a chemical mixture called gunpowder, which contains sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate (saltpeter). A fuse or direct flame sets the powder ablaze, and the chemicals break down to produce heat, causing the fireworks to explode and make that famous boom or bang.

Pyrotechnics are dangerous if misused, so it’s important to know how to keep yourself and others safe. Follow these tips from the Fire Department to have a fun and safe celebration.

Fun Pyrotechnics produces high-quality pyrotechnic products for professional fireworks, such as cylindrical shells and unique mines with various combinations, single shots and time delays. The company also offers consumer fireworks and special pyrotechnic articles for various purposes, such as bird bangers or avalanche prevention products. Its activities are based on development of its own know-how and a high level of safety and reliability of the products.

Pyrotechnics and fireworks are not just loud and spectacular when they are launched, but even when they remain on the ground they can exhilarate us with their sparks, explosions and brilliant colours. Pyrotechnic engineers must understand the chemistry of these materials to create the right chemical reactions to produce the colours and sounds we associate with fireworks.

Bratislava city council has banned usage of all pyrotechnics except those from the F1 category (including sparklers with up to 5g of flash powder, children’s fountains and squibs). The ban also applies to fireworks in categories F2 and F3, which include firecrackers, flash crackers and various rounds for these types of fireworks, Roman candles, mine fireworks and barrage fireworks. People can use them only outside the central part of the city and at least 250m away from hospitals, nursing homes, old people’s homes, shelters for animals, veterinary clinics, zoos and other facilities.

A permit is required for the use of all fireworks in categories F1 to F3 or for commercial pyrotechnics. To get one, contact the city’s fire department at least 30 days before an event, fill out an application and submit a site plan. A fire department inspector will visit the location before the event.
